“Reality is never as bad as a nightmare,
as the mental tortures we inflict on ourselves.”
Sammy Davis, Jr.
As a child or as an adult, we’ve all experienced it. Everything disconnected from logic. That feeling of impending doom. Someone is torturing you. You’re being chased by some demonic creature. The feeling you are falling from an incredible height. Then, waking just before you reach the pavement. Waking to blood curdling screams, only to realize they are your own screams.
Nightmares or bad dreams are experienced rarely by me. Sometimes when I’m sick with a fever or feeling under the weather I have disturbing dreams. My husband has awoken me on a few occasions from such dreams. Often, I don’t even remember what I was dreaming to cause such creepy nightmares.
Our minds can have such a powerful influence on how we perceive the world. The mind is this private sphere which no one but the owner has access. No one else can know our mind. We can only interpret what we consciously or unconsciously communicate.
Sometimes, little insignificant incidents in our day can trigger thoughts we are unaware of, until during a deep sleep we are face to face with that fever dream.
