I recently came across a very cool animated short film titled, The Old New World. A Moscow-based photographer and animator, Alexey Zakharov created this film by combining photographs from the past with technology from today.

To create the four-minute film, Zakharov took photos of New York, Boston, Washington, Detroit, Washington D.C. and Baltimore captured between 1900 and 1940 and animated them into a wonderful film.

There’s no information on how exactly the process was done, but judging from his past projects, it looks as though he used the images as references for 3D models, then overlaid the images as textures to effectively create an entire 3D world from still images. However it was done, the result is absolutely incredible, as you can see from this animated photography.

Eaglet Update

The eaglets at the Hays and DC nests are getting big. They are just three weeks old and doing well. I took this screen shot of the Washington D.C. family with the mother eagle feeding the eaglets. Just thought I’d give you guys an eaglet update.

Saturday Sail

It’s always a great day when I can spend time with my son. Especially spending time together outside doing something we both enjoy.

For the past year, my son has been taking sailing lessons. He started out with a small ten foot sail boat and just finished with the second phase sailing a fourteen foot boat. Today we went out to the marina and took out one of the fourteen foot boats that he has been learning on.

It was so relaxing out on the water. Just a beautiful day for sailing. The water was smooth and the wind was perfect. Not to mention the sun was shining and the temperature was in the mid 70s. A picture perfect day for a Saturday sail.

Succulent is Growing on Me

A few weeks back, the dining room table we ordered finally arrived. We wanted to have a permanent centerpiece on the table that would complement the table, so my husband and I shopped for a centerpiece. Nothing we saw seemed to work, until we came across this round potted cactus display. It was the perfect size and shape for the table.

I was a little apprehensive to buy this potted plant because I have no experience with caring for cactus plants. My only experience in the past was with prickly cactus, so I haven’t been much of a fan.

However, I’m happy to report that my new addition to my plant family seems to be doing just fine and this succulent is growing on me.

Baby Whales

Late this afternoon, we had a Pacific gray whale and her calf visit just a short 30+ feet from the beaches shore. The pair put on a show popping its huge head out of the waves and rolling around in the surf.

The juvenile whale spouted water and scratched itself in the sand just feet from the Redondo Beach shore. Dozens of onlookers watched in wonder and many snapped photos.

The local news reported that the yearling was probably making its first annual migration. Gray whales commonly migrate this time of year from feeding grounds in Alaska to Baja California lagoons, where adults mate and give birth in the warm waters.

An annual census has documented more than 1,420 grays passing by since December. This is the second time this month we’ve seen the baby whales.
