Go Fly A Kite

“True courage is like a kite;
a contrary wind raises it higher.”

Today is the 42nd Annual Redondo Beach Kite Festival at the Redondo Beach Pier. It’s a spectacular festival for kite lovers and is also Southern California’s longest running kite festival. As an avid kite connoisseur, I must say the variety of kites are spectacular.

I’ve enjoyed kite flying since I was a little girl and up into my adult life. When my son was born, I had several of my old large kites decorating his bedroom ceiling and walls.

My son’s favorite super hero is Superman. I remember when my son was four years old I bought him a very cool Superman kite. When we would fly this kite, the kite would sway up in the sky just like a flying Superman.

The last time we flew the Superman kite it was a rather windy day in the park and my young son kept wanting me to hand him the kite for him to fly. I reluctantly handed him the kite string holder when a big wind kicked up. My son released the Superman kite and the kite disappeared over some houses near the park. We both ran where we believed the kite had landed, and fortunately were able to get the kite down from a tree. The kite was badly damaged. Later when we got home, I was able to piece the kite back together, but we never flew the kite again. For many years my son saved the Superman kite, but I think he eventually parted with his favorite kite.

If you have young children or grandchildren, you might want to give kite flying a try. And if you’re looking for a cheap and entertaining hobby to share with young children, I say, go fly a kite.

The Eagle Egg Has Landed

Anyone who follows my blog knows my passion for Eagles. I follow a blog, The Eagleholic News which gives me updates on what’s happening with Eagles throughout our country. There are video cams setup throughout the United States for people like me to be able to watch Eagle families daily.

Recently, I received a notice about an Eagle in Pittsburgh Harmer which was captured by The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, laying her first egg of the season. I don’t know about you, but this video blew me away.

Watershed Moment

This country is at a critical point in our young history that marks a division or a change of course, a turning point, a real watershed moment. This moment in our American history will not only change who we are, but will forever change how other countries perceive Americans and our politics.

America is in a sad state of affairs. It’s evident by the recent GOP debate. I’m pleased to say I didn’t watch the debate, but did hear how it turned into a scary reality show not unlike The Housewives of New Jersey. What does America expect when one of their primary GOP candidates starred in his own reality show.

The good news about these scary candidates, is the political satire coming out of this ugly train wreck of an election. For decades comedy writers have had a field day with politics and our politicians.

Remember when the comedian Pat Paulsen ran against Richard Nixon? Paulsen’s 1968 campaign was crafted in order to critique both the presidential election process and the power-brokers that sustained it. He named his party the “Straight Talking American Government” (STAG) and ran under the word-playing slogan “We Can’t Stand Pat.” If you’re not familiar with the humor of the late great Pat Paulsen, visit his website that his son put together. Paulsen was undoubtedly ahead of his time.

In 1968, the country chose Nixon over Paulsen at the polls, but then the 1960s didn’t have a reality show star to give Nixon a run for his money.

I came across a YouTube video of Pat Paulsen from 1968. It blew me away to hear in this video the same issues this country faces today. Will we ever fix these problems or are we so insane that we just keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

I often wonder what our lives would be like if Pat Paulsen had beat Nixon in 1968. It just might have been the watershed moment this country needed and we wouldn’t be witnessing an election that is an American Horror Show.
