Have a Good Laugh

“I avoid all the language and nudity and
violence and everything.
I have enough of that at home.”

Have a Good Lauch

I read one of the funniest books I read in a long time. It was written by a comedian that I’ve enjoyed for years. The book is, What’s So Funny? by Tim Conway.

When I was a teenager growing up, one of my favorite television shows was the Carol Burnett Show. There’s a comedy routine Tim Conway and Harvey Korman did that is the best. I found the sketch on YouTube and thought I’d share it with those of you who remember the sketch and those that have never seen the funny routine.

Have a good laugh.

Erma Bombeck, The Bomb

Erma Bombeck   2/21/1927 to 4/22/1996

Most of you won’t remember Erma Bombeck. She was famous in the 1960s to the 1990s with her writing about everyday life and down home humor.

She began her career writing for a local Ohio newspaper and quickly moved up to having her own column. She had a talent for writing good clean humor and knew what successful column writing entailed.

Hook ’em with the lead
Hold ’em with laughter
Exit with a quip
They won’t forget

She released her first book, At Wit’s End in 1967 to moderate reviews, but between her lecturing and successful column her book became a big hit.

Bombeck published 15 books, most of them best sellers, and wrote over 4,000 newspaper columns. Her silver-tongued humor chronicled her ordinary life of a midwestern suburban housewife.

I was introduced to her writing in the late 1960’s after reading her articles in Reader’s Digest, Family Circle, RedbookMcCall’s and other magazine’s my mom had lying around the house. Her articles were always short, sweet and packed with humor. She inspired me to read and write more.

If you’ve never heard or read Bombeck’s work, you might enjoy reading one of her books. You can find her books at the library, on Amazon and even through eBooks.

Erma’s writings always brings back fond memories of my youth and she will always be Erma Bombeck, the Bomb.

Colossal Podcasts

“Podcasting is great. Total freedom.”
Bill Burr

Gilbert GottfriedThis past week, as I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve been under the weather. My concentration has been limited, so I’ve been spending my time listening to Podcasts.

As most of you fellow bloggers may know, Podcasts were first known as audioblogging, and has its roots dating back to the 1980s. I’ve listened to a quite a few Podcasts through the years. However, it wasn’t until about a month ago I listened to my first Podcast from the Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcasts.

This first Gottfried Podcast was an interview he did with Ken Berry. After this entertaining interview, I was so hooked that I then went and listened to all the previous interviews, with such stars as Barbara Feldon, Bill Mumy, Dick Cavett and Henry Winkler, just to mention a few. You definitely should listen to the Bill Mumy interview. Mumy is a child actor famous as the little boy in the Twilight Zone episode, “It’s a Good Life”, where he played a child who terrorizes his town with psychic powers.

We are so bombarded with TV, Movies, and visual stimulation that it was refreshing just to listen to an interview. You find yourself really listening when you don’t have images to distract you from the content. Growing up with TV as a household staple, I never really experienced the radio style of entertainment. Radio and/or Podcast entertainment leaves your imagination open to so much more.

There are thousands of Podcasts to choose from on SoundCloud. But, I’m really enjoying listening to Gilbert Gottfried who sits down in his New York City apartment with Hollywood legends and behind-the-scenes talents.

You can check out these great Podcasts by visiting: Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcasts.

Four Letter Words

Four Letter Words

Been fighting a bug I picked up and been feeling under the weather. Too much cough syrup, and other bug fighting meds, so not in the best frame of mind for blogging anything worth posting.

All I can think of are a few four letter words.

Laughter is the Best Medicine

A day without laughter is a day wasted.”

Danny Kaye

The great Danny Kaye as Walter Mitty

A sincere compliment can really boost ones morale. I’m not one who demands constant attention or praise. But, it sure is nice to hear, “good job” once in a while. I always have showered my son and husband with compliments. Whenever I accomplish a major hurdle, my son is always the first to give me a compliment.

After 20+ years living together, I’ve come to realize it’s just not my husbands style to give out compliments easily. I guess my husband’s style is more akin to Don Rickles than Johnny Carson.

A few years back I suggested my husband “get in touch with his feminine side”. So one day he said something that was showing his feelings. When he realized this, he stopped and pointed out to me that, “he was getting in contact with his feminine side”.

He may not dish out kudos or compliments easily, but he makes me laugh. To me, that’s more important than any compliment he could ever give me. When I’m feeling low, I can always count on him to make me laugh.

Fishing for compliments has never been something I’ve ever had to do. And I’m not planning on starting this late in life. Besides, I’d much rather be with someone who makes me laugh, because as the old proverb says, “laughter is the best medicine”.
