Colossal Podcasts

“Podcasting is great. Total freedom.”
Bill Burr

Gilbert GottfriedThis past week, as I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve been under the weather. My concentration has been limited, so I’ve been spending my time listening to Podcasts.

As most of you fellow bloggers may know, Podcasts were first known as audioblogging, and has its roots dating back to the 1980s. I’ve listened to a quite a few Podcasts through the years. However, it wasn’t until about a month ago I listened to my first Podcast from the Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcasts.

This first Gottfried Podcast was an interview he did with Ken Berry. After this entertaining interview, I was so hooked that I then went and listened to all the previous interviews, with such stars as Barbara Feldon, Bill Mumy, Dick Cavett and Henry Winkler, just to mention a few. You definitely should listen to the Bill Mumy interview. Mumy is a child actor famous as the little boy in the Twilight Zone episode, “It’s a Good Life”, where he played a child who terrorizes his town with psychic powers.

We are so bombarded with TV, Movies, and visual stimulation that it was refreshing just to listen to an interview. You find yourself really listening when you don’t have images to distract you from the content. Growing up with TV as a household staple, I never really experienced the radio style of entertainment. Radio and/or Podcast entertainment leaves your imagination open to so much more.

There are thousands of Podcasts to choose from on SoundCloud. But, I’m really enjoying listening to Gilbert Gottfried who sits down in his New York City apartment with Hollywood legends and behind-the-scenes talents.

Laughter is the Best Medicine

Danny Kaye

The great Danny Kaye as Walter Mitty

A sincere compliment can really boost ones morale. I’m not one who demands constant attention or praise. But, it sure is nice to hear, “good job” once in a while. I always have showered my son and husband with compliments. Whenever I accomplish a major hurdle, my son is always the first to give me a compliment.

After 20+ years living together, I’ve come to realize it’s just not my husbands style to give out compliments easily. I guess my husband’s style is more akin to Don Rickles than Johnny Carson.

A few years back I suggested my husband “get in touch with his feminine side”. So one day he said something that was showing his feelings. When he realized this, he stopped and pointed out to me that, “he was getting in contact with his feminine side”.

He may not dish out kudos or compliments easily, but he makes me laugh. To me, that’s more important than any compliment he could ever give me. When I’m feeling low, I can always count on him to make me laugh.

Fishing for compliments has never been something I’ve ever had to do. And I’m not planning on starting this late in life. Besides, I’d much rather be with someone who makes me laugh, because as the old proverb says, “laughter is the best medicine”.

Funny Girl Album Cover from 1965 Broadway Show

One of my all time favorite musicals “Funny Girl” was on television the other night. I was just a kid when my parents brought this Broadway hit album home in 1965. It didn’t take me long before I had every lyric of every song memorized.

“Funny Girl” became a huge hit, not only as a Broadway Musical but also as a movie. I was too young to see the Broadway version, but I was the first in line at the movie theater with my friends when it was released in September 1968.

I can remember sitting in the movie theater singing along with Streisand as she sang each and every song. My friends were blown away that I knew all the lyrics. Especially since I hadn’t told them I knew all the music. I just thought every kid knew the lyrics. Guess I was wrong.

To my surprise, when I watched the movie the other day, all the lyrics came back to me. How is it I can’t remember what I made for breakfast two days ago, but start playing the music from “Funny Girl” and I start singing along without missing a note or lyric. Guess I’m just a funny girl.
