Prominent Pachyderm Painter

“The question is, are we happy to suppose
that our grandchildren may never be able to see
an elephant except in a picture book?”
David Attenborough

Artistic Elephant

Lucky with Nick Marx, her savior.

She was found abandoned at 6 months old after her mother was killed by poachers. Now, at 15 years old, she is one of the most popular animals out of 1,200 other rescued animals at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center in Cambodia.

Her name is Lucky. She is an Asian elephant who has been battling a series of illnesses, which started with a fatal elephant virus.

Earlier this year, Lucky stopped eating and had to be fed and medicated through an intravenous drip into veins in her ear. Nick Marx, wildlife rescue director and his team battled for weeks to keep the plucky pachyderm alive. The $40,000 cost of her treatment quickly drained the resources of the rescue center as well as Marx’s savings.

To raise money for Lucky’s treatment, she was taught to paint on canvases as well as T-shirts. Using a rewards-based system by doling out her favorite fruit treats as a means of reinforcement, she quickly caught on. The paintings and T-shirts were auctioned off at the Rescue Center.

Lucky’s Auctioned Artwork

Word quickly spread about Lucky’s paintings. The New York based Wildlife Alliance, which supports the center, raised more than $1,100 by auctioning just two of her paintings. As far as anybody knows, this is a record for original works by an elephant.

It was just this past month that Lucky showed the first signs of recovery: Flapping her ears, showering herself and feasting on the grass.

Thanks to Lucky’s handlers clever auction idea and the funds raised from sales, Lucky is on her way to a full recovery.

As for Lucky’s paintings, she is fast becoming a prominent pachyderm painter.

Habit-Forming

“It’s a drone nation. Where everything and
everyone is remotely controlled.”

Habit Forming

Hubbies current quad collection and growing.

A few years ago my husband became interested in quadcopters aka mini drones. The first quad he bought, was a medium size quadcopter made by Lady Bug. The skill level to operate this little lady was so difficult, you needed to have a pilot license.

He was getting quite skilled flying his Lady Bug, when the remote controller device went south. Efforts by everyone could not fix the device, so his $200+ toy went into the trash.

My son advised his stepdad to buy a cheaper, smaller and easier to operate quadcopter that he bought online for under $20. My husband quickly purchased one of these miniature quads and has been collecting them ever since.

He now has several (see photo above) and continues to purchase them for friends and family as gifts. The fun part about this little hobby of his is that the quads are so small and maneuverable that he can fly them throughout the house.

The manufacturers should post a warning label on the box. Buying and flying these copters may be habit-forming.

Fried Chicken

Dixie Fry Original Recipe Coating Mix

For a couple of days now, I have been craving fried chicken. I’m not a big fan of KFC or fast food, and I didn’t want to make deep-fried food either. I wanted good old-fashioned home-made fried chicken.

When I went to the store to buy the fresh chicken, I discovered a product for making fried chicken. It’s Dixie Fry Original Recipe Coating Mix. It only takes five minutes to prepare, and 45 minutes to bake in the oven. So, I thought I’d give it a try.

The chicken parts I used are the boneless thighs and breast with the skin. Let me tell you, this chicken recipe is so delicious, it is finger licking good !

Dixie FryIf you like fried chicken and you want an easy, quick and inexpensive way to make it, I highly recommend trying out this product.

You can find it in your grocery stores baking section and you won’t be disappointed with this delicious fried chicken

Fever Dream

“Reality is never as bad as a nightmare,
as the mental tortures we inflict on ourselves.”
Sammy Davis, Jr.

Fever Dream

As a child or as an adult, we’ve all experienced it. Everything disconnected from logic. That feeling of impending doom. Someone is torturing you. You’re being chased by some demonic creature. The feeling you are falling from an incredible height. Then, waking just before you reach the pavement. Waking to blood curdling screams, only to realize they are your own screams.

Nightmares or bad dreams are experienced rarely by me. Sometimes when I’m sick with a fever or feeling under the weather I have disturbing dreams. My husband has awoken me on a few occasions from such dreams. Often, I don’t even remember what I was dreaming to cause such creepy nightmares.

Our minds can have such a powerful influence on how we perceive the world. The mind is this private sphere which no one but the owner has access. No one else can know our mind. We can only interpret what we consciously or unconsciously communicate.

Sometimes, little insignificant incidents in our day can trigger thoughts we are unaware of, until during a deep sleep we are face to face with that fever dream.
